This project is down for the past two months and maybe more, as I recently relocated back into the Philippines. A lot of my items are still in transit as I type this.
Another new experience was travelling with my bugs, I bought a hand carry luggage to be able to bring it in the cabin. Worked out pretty well except for puzzling stares when I checked it in the gate. Hope that I don’t encounter any problems when I power it up, when i eventually get the power cables sorted.

A few things that was never finished when I left Singapore:
+ 4 Channel Matrix Mixer/ Format Jumbler in an M-format hammond enclosure
+ Dual Pre-amplifier and Dual LM386 amplifier breakout box.

Will be making a proper enclosure/ end cheeks for my two frame as well. So there are a lot of things in my plate.

As an aside I am also envisioning a side project IWUQIW that would compliment Wiquwi. It will be more cassette based and would actually distort, loop and playback the sounds that are generated from my Wiquwi project recorded in cassette. I am slowly building up the items needed for the project. Tracking down a four track as well as a three head cassette player for playback duties. Currently I have acquired a blind cassette player for live pitch shifting and FSU cassette live playback so that’s a start.

This month as I have been obsessing about Matrix Mixers and David Tudor. I asked my friend to help me build a 8 x 8 passive matrix mixer ta add a lot of tone and grain in my sound. This week after a busy few weeks, was able to play with the mixer.
My first pass. Still not properly grounded in my case but I still had great fun nonetheless.
In this set up I was utilizing it as the main output mixer. The passive mixer gave some texture to the smooth sine waves passing through it. Frequency shifter is a revelation for me in this patch, it can go from tiny plucked string like sounds to really downright nasty tones.

Baclaran is a barangay (neighborhood district) located in northern area of the City of Parañaque, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is also known to be located at the borders of the cities of Parañaque and Pasay.
The area is well known for the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help also known as the Redemptorist Church or Baclaran Church, dedicated to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. There is also a Muslim mosque, the Baclaran Mosque. Baclaran is known for its children and youth membership to the Rondalla which won in NAMCYA way back 1996 and the Drum and Lyre Band.
It is also has a number flea markets (tiangges), selling everything from clothes and electronics to home decorations and traditional medicine.

This is where I grew up. It’s in the border of the two cities of Paranaque and Pasay. And is also home to a large number of flea market. The noise emanating from this place is loud, abrasive, constant and beautiful at the same time.
In this piece I tried to incorporate that feeling of abrasive sounds that turns to soothing when you sit down long enough.

Last weekend, me and Dougall planned to build a Mini power from scratch.
The schematic was from Ken Stone of CGS fame:

The build started early at 11 am we met at Sim Lim Tower to haul in the parts. We were buying for two sets as Dougall wanted to build together with me. I say a great idea as I don’t think I will be able to build this myself.

We did have to make a second trip in the afternoon for a late lunch as well as to pick up a few parts that was mistakenly given to us. The build went slow, as Dougall was guiding me along the way alternating with the soldering. We did not buy a ready made PCB so we had to make it from a perforated board. It was good in a way as we were forced to slow down and try to understand the schematics of the circuit. But really difficult and time consuming especially for a beginner like me. In the end it was well worth it.

The day ended with an almost finished build except for the paneling, so I had to come back in the afternoon of the next day to finish it up. The panels were made from the free bug blanks that Tom has supplied to me when I first bought the frame. It was of a PCB material and I thought to myself this will be easy to drill. Man I was wrong! as the PCB was thick and was not as easy as I was thinking. This got me seriously thinking about the direction I want to take in my other DIY panels. Although the panels looked great together with the other panel as they have the same thickness and matching blue colors.

Anyway it was a fruitful weekend as I was able to come home with new power supply for my frame which then will be converted into a skiff as in when I eventually have my cabinet done.

Now to try and practice in preparation for a planned jam this coming weekend.



Proposal for Wiquwi BugBrand Modular Two Frame Set up.
The above is what I am trying to achieve on my BugBrand Modular, of course this will be on a long term basis as the modules are really hard to obtain especially some of the highly coveted modules like the PT delay. These modules are always are kept by their original owners and are hardly put up for sale. And after opening up myself in the Trading post of the bug users, it is much more viable to buy pre used modules as the price is a lot more attractive particularly when buying multiple modules. The above configuration is updated with the acquired modules blacked out for reference on the progress of the system.

As the other half of my system I am planning to have an additional two frames where I will be building my own modules from component kits and DIY pcb offering in the Muffwiggler Forums. The processes of me stuffing a few PCB’s have started and I have just finished two PCB’s this weekend, namely the Jerkster and Double Well Chaos Generator from Ian Fritz. They were ordered from Bridechamber together with the component. It was a bit of a challenge as I needed to identify the resistor values. This is a foreign territory for me and I am finding it quite exciting to navigate a totally different terrain.

I made a few mistakes on the double well and will be redoing some of the parts before asking my friend Dougall to help me. The special ten turn tapered pots are also ordered and awaiting for the final invoice.

There are a few more PCB’s coming my way namely the Bindubba 1 and the Random Looping Sequencer. This and the paneling of the LFO and the Chaos Generators will keep me busy for this month.
Looks like the DIY backlog is still on check.

The power module that will be incorporated in the case

Another thing that needs to be considered is the enclosure for the system.
I have been toying with the idea of incorporating the design of the PAIA 4761 cabinet design.
This is a clamshell like enclosure that houses two frames on each side, although the powering of each all the modules on one side might be the issue.
In any case I just love the look of an old PAIA cabinet.

After a few hours of walking aimlessly, asking a few unsuspecting locals. I finally was able to find a place that I can ask to cut to size stainless steel sheets. This will be used for my DIY panels to be integrated to the BugBrand System.
So excited to get this started. Although when I came home I found out that the panels are a bit off from the Bug blanks. I just need to come back next weekend to cut them down to size.

As an introduction, the above image is the ‘workshop’ of my father were he tinkers, makes and repairs anything he can get he’s hands on. A complete anti thesis of my skills I might add. Here is me hoping that someday I can have a fraction of that skill, drive and of course all those tools.
We started planning it as a wooden enclosure using some scrap wooden planks around. Unfortunately halfway into the cutting we realized that the plank available was not enough. So we resorted to just having it made by Rolly our tinsmith using one of the metal plates available in the workshop. After giving the proper instruction, Rolly came back after 4 hours with this folded metal enclosure.

Next step is to bring it back to Singapore and to install the necessary power supply while awaiting for the panels from Dmitri.
