Monthly Archives: October 2011

Every Saturday afternoon, with good graces from widdly and his wife. I get to play and learn a lot more than I can muster on this little machine. The 4 hours of wiggling with a can of coke to booth is priceless. I hope to get a firmer grasp on terms and concepts in the next few weeks before mine will be delivered straight from AUS.
This has been turning into a favorite module so far.

My newly minted cornet

Im still speechless. Got this cheap of course otherwise I wouldn’t pick this up.
Originally intending to buy just a pocket trumpet, unfortunately my friend Dennis only has this which I coerced him to let it go for a price that I am comfortable in paying. Not in the greatest condition but it’s a great start nonetheless.
Now I need to decide to get a teacher or just learn this on my own. I want to explore more of tones and textures but of course it would be great to be able to play St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins.

I am hoping that I get invited to this thing more regularly enough for me to have a consistent feel of my music in a public setting. The more I get to play, the more comfortable I get with my own direction. This of course will not limit the exploration given that I just started on the early part of the year. I will be trying to make new instruments in the coming weeks to bring a different flavor each session.

On this particular night we have a few more guests that shuffled into the line up.
+ Nickolai Nickolov (Bulgaria) – Guitar improvisation.
+ Robbie Avenaim (Australia) – Percussion
+ Timothy O’Dwyer (Australia) – Saxophone

This time I made sure that I record the sets that I’m involved in. Recorded here is Set 2 and Set 4 both of which deserves a thorough listening in my meager opinion. Although the last set is I guess what keeps musicians from coming back. It was a total rush when we all reached that peak, it was an indescribable feeling and it is something that I have experienced for the first time. We clicked on this set, and everyone came out with a wide grin. This is getting addicting.

This was originally a 30 minute jam cut into half because I run out of batteries on my recorder.
Hopefully I could upload the music in all its glory when Darren sends me the audio file.
I was more comfortable in this song, compared to the first set that I came in which I was able to post the last few days.
Enjoy!

The group has been playing as a quartet these past few months, playing improvise jam at the Night and Day Bar every Wednesday. But has been slowed this past month because of individual commitments. I had been invited by Bani to come over and play with them for this particular installment. So I brought along with me a few choice handheld electronic instruments that could compliment the already mature sound of the group.
There was a few people documenting Darren’s musical activities so we were able to tag along with the free publicity. Although I don’t have any idea where or when it will be shown.
The group did one set as a quartet to start off, then I was able to come in on the second set, which was recorded here in video with the help of my girlfriend Joanne. Then Darren and Brian did a Duo, followed by another duo performance by Bani and Mohamad.
As a night cap, we did the last set as a quintet which lasted for approximately 30 minuites. This was an epic jam that unfortunately I wasn’t able to record in full. I have already requested Darren for a copy and will hopefully post it in the near future.

I have not been able to update or do something in this project for the past few months.
After my collaborator and guide Mel Araneta was forced to go back home, I have been left here in my own devices. Trying to make contacts and keep this project alive. I hopefully will have a few things lined up for this next few months.
BOCGS- BOG
The biggest thing for me right now is my preparation to make way for a big purchase this year. It is a DIY CGS/ Serge panel which I hope will be my gateway synth, to start me off into a wonderful modular synthesizer journey. Hopefully this comes to fruition within this year.
I have met another likeminded person with the experience on synthesis, so this will be another step into a different plane. Exciting times indeed.
A few jams planned out this coming months as well, and I hope to post them as soon as I am able to record and edit the shows.
That’s it for the moment.
